day 1

(5 mins)

Opening

What you can expect

  • A clear governance framework with concrete next steps to embed governance into your organisation’s operating model
  • Understanding of key roles and responsibilities
  • Actionable approaches to mitigating data risk including how misalignment on governance terms and roles contributes to regulatory breaches, and what ‘good’ looks like in top financial firms

(20 mins)

Laying the Foundations

Aligning on what good governance looks like and what it delivers

To get started, we’ll establish a shared understanding of what data governance means not just in theory, but in practice. Rather than a traditional 101, this will be a collaborative discussion to:

  • Align and create a shared understanding on key definitions related to data governance
  • Explore why data governance matters especially in the context of compliance (e.g. GDPR, CCPA, and FS-specific regulations like BCBS 239), risk management, data quality and organisational trust.
  • Reflect on your current setup: How is data governance currently approached in your organisation? What’s working, and where are the gaps?

Participants will map out their current data governance structures and practices, setting the stage for deeper exploration throughout the workshop.

(25 mins)

Data Governance in Practice Participant activity

Frameworks, roles, and responsibilities

Together we will unpack the frameworks that shape data governance and the key roles that bring it to life. You’ll get a clear view of the landscape, what frameworks (DAMA-DMBOK) and standards (ISO/IEC 38505-1 & 8000-51) exist, how they might apply to your organisation, and how to align with or adapt them to design an approach that fits your context.

Participants will identify who currently holds key data governance roles in your organisation—such as data owners, stewards, custodians and consumers. You’ll surface gaps, overlaps, and areas needing clarity to start building a clearer picture of accountability. Participants will walk away with a clear understanding of how misalignment on governance terms and roles contributes to regulatory breaches, and what ‘good’ looks like in top-performing financial organisations.

Lessons from the Field

Case study of an asset manager’s governance transformation

At one of the world’s largest asset management firms, we helped cut governance approval cycles from 3 weeks to just 2 days and enabled the delivery of 30+ new data products in under 6 months. How? By putting the right foundations in place:

  • Defining usage rules, masking, SLAs, and access controls
  • Generating and linking business and technical metadata
  • Integrating with platforms like Collibra for seamless workflow approvals
  • Keeping everything current through CI/CD pipelines

Our experts will share how organisations are navigating the journey to effective data governance, what’s working, where things can go wrong and what we’ve learned along the way.

(35 mins)

Operationalising Governance Participant activity

Turning strategy into practice with tools and data contracts

Putting it into practice we’ll explore how data contracts can help close common governance gaps by creating clear, enforceable expectations between data producers and consumers.

From there, we’ll look at how to operationalise governance through key tools and processes, including:

  • Metadata and lineage tracking for visibility and transparency
  • Automated data quality checks to ensure reliability
  • Integration with platforms like Collibra for seamless workflow and approval management
  • CI/CD pipelines to keep governance dynamic, consistent and always up-to-date

Homework: Participants will complete a simplified data contract template to practice defining clear roles, rules, and responsibilities in a data flow.

Wrap-up & Next Steps

Recap, Q&A, and practical checklist

To close the session, we’ll open the floor for any final questions and reflections. We’ll recap the key takeaways and share a practical checklist and summary guide to support you as you apply what you’ve learned back in your organisation.
