My name is Alice Kirby, and I spent eight weeks at esynergy as part of a tech internship in London. Over that time I gained hands-on experience across multiple teams and developed a much clearer understanding of what working in tech consulting actually involves.
In this blog I answer some key questions about my tech internship experience — what I worked on, what I learned, and how it shaped my career thinking.
Why did you choose work experience in tech consulting?
To begin with, I wanted to experience what a tech internship in London felt like and to work in an office in the city for the first time. Alongside that, I was also curious to understand more about the tech industry. From reading coverage in the news about new tech developments and articles about companies increasingly hiring consultancies to integrate AI into their operations, I felt like this was an important industry to explore.
“I just wanted a taste of corporate life and to see if it was something I would enjoy.”
What were your first impressions of esynergy?
From the very beginning, esynergy felt quite different from what I expected. The office was energetic, welcoming, and slightly crazy, but in a good way. Because of this, I settled in quickly, as everyone made a real effort to include me. It was easy to speak to people across different teams, and as a result, I never felt like “just an intern.”
What stood out most, however, was the type of work I was given. Rather than being assigned basic admin tasks, I was trusted with work that actually contributed to the business. Overall, the culture felt very close-knit, and it genuinely had a family dynamic where people support each other.
What was it like working across different teams?
One of the most valuable parts of my experience was rotating across three teams: talent, marketing, and delivery. Because each team worked in a slightly different way, this gave me a much broader understanding of how the business operates.
At first, I did not expect rotating between teams to make such a difference. However, over time, it became clear that this was one of the most useful aspects of the experience. It allowed me to try different types of work and, importantly, figure out what I actually enjoy. This structure is a huge advantage of a tech internship in London, giving interns broad exposure to different disciplines and ways of working.
What did you do in the talent team?
In the talent team, I mainly worked on improving LinkedIn profiles for our associates. This was focused on strengthening visibility and improving how the company presents itself externally.
Through this, I realised how important personal branding is, especially on platforms like LinkedIn. Even small adjustments can significantly improve how professional and visible someone appears.
What did you do in the marketing team?
In contrast, marketing involved a much wider range of tasks. For instance, I created a calendar of ideas for client hospitality events, put together a venue directory for corporate dinners, and helped to organise the 2026 Tech Series conference. Overall, the work felt very hands-on and closely linked to business development, which made it particularly interesting.
I hadn’t initially thought about the huge role marketing plays within companies, nor had I considered it as a potential career. However, my rotation with the team completely changed my perspective and has given me an exciting option for my future.
What did you do in the delivery team?
Meanwhile, the delivery team gave me direct exposure to client work. I attended meetings across public, private, and non-profit sectors, which helped me understand how consulting works in different contexts.
After around five weeks, I had the opportunity to present at a town hall on social value. This was a big milestone for me and something I had not expected so early on.
In addition, I worked on documents that the team can continue to use after I left, which made the experience feel even more meaningful.
“Knowing my work would still be used after I left was really rewarding.”
What are the biggest things you learned?
Looking back, there are three key lessons that really stand out:
- Networking is incredibly important. Before starting, I did not even have LinkedIn, but I quickly realised how valuable it is for building connections. “It’s not just about what you know, it’s also about who you know.”
- Asking questions is essential. By asking questions regularly, I was able to learn faster and gain a better understanding of the work.
- Effort makes a huge difference. The more I put myself forward and took on tasks, the more opportunities I was given. “The more effort you put in, the more you get out of it.”
What is the culture at esynergy really like?
What really sets esynergy apart is its culture. Unlike more traditional corporate environments, the company genuinely values its people. The idea of a “family” culture is not just something that is said, but something that is actually lived day to day. People support each other both inside and outside of work.
In addition to this, there are strong benefits such as healthcare and flexible working hours. These benefits actively support a healthy work-life balance.
How has this experience changed your career thinking?
Overall, this tech internship in London changed my perspective more than I expected.
Before joining, I did not think tech or consulting would be for me. Now, however, I see both as realistic and interesting options. This change in mindset has even helped me secure my next role at another consultancy. Most importantly, I realised that enjoying your work really matters.
What advice would you give to someone considering work experience at esynergy?
If I had to give one piece of advice, it would simply be: go for it.
Something I learnt from my esynergy mentor, Clare Garnham, is that all it takes is one email, and I strongly believe that if you do not ask, you do not get.
Final thoughts
Looking back, my eight weeks at esynergy gave me far more than just work experience. I gained confidence, developed practical skills, and built a much clearer understanding of what I want to do next.
“I’m leaving with more clarity, more confidence, and a much better idea of my future.”
I’d like to thank everyone who made me feel like an included and supported part of the esynergy family – the company lunches, office move and Easter egg hunt were definitely bonding experiences!
