My work experience at esynergy: three weeks of learning, AI, and consulting

Hi, my name is Sam, and I recently completed a three-week work experience placement at esynergy.

During my placement, I spent most of my time learning from the Consulting and Delivery teams. Along the way, I also gained exposure to many other areas of the business, giving me a broader understanding of how a technology consultancy operates.

Below, I’ve answered a few questions about my experience.

What interested you in applying for work experience at esynergy?

I’ve always been interested in both technology and consulting, so I wanted the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into how a technology consultancy works day to day.

Rather than simply reading about the industry or talking to people about consulting, I wanted practical experience. Seeing how consultants work with clients, solve business problems, and collaborate with colleagues gave me a much clearer understanding of the role.

What particularly attracted me to esynergy was its focus on AI and Data. These are two areas transforming every industry and reshaping the way we work. I was eager to learn more from people implementing these technologies directly within businesses.

More importantly, I wanted an experience that would help me make informed career decisions. Developing practical skills while exploring different roles would also help me identify the career path best suited to me.

What were your first impressions of esynergy?

Before starting my placement, my impression was that esynergy genuinely cared about developing people and creating opportunities.

While researching the company, I read several blog posts about internships and work experience placements. Hearing how previous students had been supported throughout their placements gave me the impression that esynergy had a strong community culture and invested in helping people at the start of their careers.

Those expectations proved to be completely accurate.

How did the reality of working in a tech consultancy compare to your expectations?

One of the biggest surprises was how interconnected every part of the business is.

Before my placement, I imagined consultants spending most of their time delivering technical solutions. What I hadn’t appreciated was how closely Consulting, Delivery, Marketing, Sales, and other teams work together.

Winning new business, building client relationships, understanding customer needs, and delivering successful outcomes all depend on strong collaboration across the company.

What activities and projects did you get involved in?

Throughout my placement, I had the opportunity to experience a wide variety of work across both the Consulting and Delivery teams.

Some of the highlights included:

  • Attending client meetings and observing how consultants communicated with stakeholders, asked thoughtful questions, and structured discussions around solving business problems.
  • Researching partnerships with organisations including AWS AWS Specializations, Microsoft AzureMicrosoft AI – Business Solutions and Tools , Google Cloud, and Microsoft to support esynergy’s AI specialism, Intent.
  • Learning how to use Power BI to build dashboards that analysed business development data, such as where opportunities were being won or lost across different sectors.
  • Starting a “vibe coding” project after attending an AI Elevenses session with Andy, Head of Applied AI. The project involved creating a workflow to help the Delivery team manage outreach to associates regarding LinkedIn visibility.
  • Sitting in on Delivery meetings to understand statements of work and how projects are managed from initial planning through to completion.
  • Exploring a predictive data model created by Anito, a Data Scientist at esynergy, which forecasted donations for Marie Curie.
  • Attending esynergy’s Tech Series, where a panel of CTOs, CIOs, and CISOs discussed topics including security, resilience, and governance. The event also gave me the chance to meet associates and professionals from across the technology industry.

Each activity provided a different perspective on how the consultancy operates and showed how varied the work can be.

Was there a particular meeting or project that stood out?

One conversation that had a lasting impact was with Neil McIvor.

After I mentioned my interest in Data, he generously took the time to talk through his career. He explained the different paths available within the field and highlighted how data roles vary depending on the organisation, responsibilities, and skills involved.

The part that fascinated me most was hearing about his time as Chief Data Officer at the Department for Education.

He explained how accurate, well-managed data played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic. School attendance data helped model how the virus was spreading, allowing better-informed decisions that made a real difference.

Listening to real examples of how data can improve public services was inspiring. It reinforced how meaningful a career in Data can be.

What was the most valuable lesson you took away?

Of the many lessons I learned, the biggest was understanding how AI is changing the workplace.

Throughout my placement, I saw colleagues using AI to create tools, automate workflows, and build dashboards that previously would have taken many hours to produce. Seeing these technologies used in everyday work made the impact of AI feel much more tangible.

Like many people early in their careers, I sometimes feel uncertainty about how AI will shape future jobs. Spending time at esynergy gave me a much clearer picture of where the industry is heading.

As a result, I now have a better understanding of the skills I want to continue developing.

What did you enjoy most about the company culture?

Without question, it was the people.

Everyone I met was friendly, welcoming, and incredibly generous with their time. No matter how busy they were, people were always willing to answer questions, explain what they did, and share their experiences.

Although I was only there for three weeks, I also heard plenty about the company’s social side. Team activities included hiking Snowdon, caving, company trips to Crete, and even parachuting.

Those stories reinforced the impression that esynergy has built a culture where people work hard, support one another, and genuinely enjoy spending time together.

Has this experience influenced your future career aspirations?

Absolutely.

The placement confirmed that technology is an industry where I can genuinely see myself building a career.

Consulting particularly appealed to me because it combines problem-solving, communication, and technology. At the same time, the placement exposed me to many other roles that use similar transferable skills.

Because of that exposure, I now have a much broader understanding of the opportunities available and can see several career paths that I hadn’t previously considered.

If you could describe your experience at esynergy in three words, what would they be?

Insightful. Rewarding. Enjoyable.

Final thoughts

Completing my work experience at esynergy gave me far more than an insight into consulting.

The placement gave me confidence in the direction I want to take my career. It also provided valuable skills, experiences, and perspectives that I’ll carry forward into future opportunities.

Finally, I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone at esynergy. Thank you for making me feel so welcome, for generously sharing your knowledge and experience, and for giving me such an incredible opportunity.
